چکیده

Density functional theory calculations suggest that bicyclic structures of the "molybdopterin" in DMSO reductases may have an important catalytic role in oxygen atom transfer reactions.

Solvent-Dependent Pyranopterin Cyclization in Molybdenum Cofactor Model Complexes.

The conserved pterin dithiolene ligand that coordinates molybdenum (Mo) in the cofactor (Moco) of mononuclear Mo enzymes can exist in both a tricyclic pyranopterin dithiolene form and as a bicyclic pterin-dithiolene form as observed in protein crystal structures of several bacterial molybdoenzymes. Interconversion between the tricyclic and bicyclic forms via pyran scission and cyclization has b...

A crystallographic view of the molybdenum cofactor †

The molybdenum cofactor (Moco) has been found to be associated with a diverse set of redox enzymes and contains a mononuclear molybdenum or tungsten ion co-ordinated by the dithiolene sulfurs of one or two molybdopterin {a pterin [2-amino-4(1H )-pteridinone] derivative} ligands. The remaining co-ordination sites on the metal are occupied by non-protein oxygen or sulfur species and, occasionally...

Dimethylsulphoxide reductase from purple phototrophic bacteria: structures and mechanism(s).

With the exception of nitrogenase, molybdenum is present in a diverse, but coherent group of enzymes which contain a pterin molybdenum cofactor (Moco) as a prosthetic group [l]. This group of enzymes, known as the molybdenum oxotransferases and hydroxylases, carry out a two-electron oxidation-reduction reaction which is linked to oxygen atom transfer to or from a substrate. This is illustrated ...

Molybdenum-cofactor-containing enzymes: structure and mechanism.

Molybdenum-containing enzymes catalyze basic metabolic reactions in the nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon cycles. With the exception of the nitrogenase cofactor, molybdenum is incorporated into proteins as the molybdenum cofactor that contains a mononuclear molybdenum atom coordinated to the sulfur atoms of a pterin derivative named molybdopterin. Certain microorganisms can also utilize tungsten in ...

Molybdenum enzymes.

There are many molybdenum-containing enzymes distributed throughout the biosphere. The availability of molybdenum to biological systems is due to the high water solubility of oxidized forms of the metal. Molybdenum enzymes can be grouped on the basis of the structure of the metal centre. Three principal families of enzyme exist, with active sites consisting of (ppt)MoOS(OH) (the molybdenum hydr...
